We offer the benefits you would expect from a traditional provider of Protection and Indemnity insurance, along with up-to-date cover for your whole range of emerging liabilities.
Our fixed premium Protection and Indemnity (P&I) cover protects you worldwide for the full range of third-party liabilities and expenses arising out of the ownership or operation of ships. We offer it via our wholly-owned subsidiary, British Marine, with limits of up to US$1bn.
Founded in 1876, demutualised in 2000 and bought by QBE in 2005, British Marine today combines the traditional virtues of a P&I club with the stability and financial strength of QBE. We offer P&I cover on similar terms to the mutuals, but without any risk of release calls or supplementary calls.
Our experienced P&I underwriters have the expertise to take on more technical and unusual risks. We pride ourselves on covering an extremely wide range of vessel types, although not usually exceeding 20,000 gt. We offer cover for specialist operations and contractual liability, as well as more usual covers such as War and charterers’ cover with damage to hull. We are also one of the leading insurers of superyachts.
We offer the security you would expect of a division of the QBE Group, one of the world’s leading insurers. QBE Insurance (Europe) Limited has a strong balance sheet, which is reflected in our insurer financial strength ratings of A+ positive (Standard & Poor’s), A+ stable (Fitch Ratings) and A stable (A. M. Best).
We are proud to offer a claims service that is on a par with the best of the P&I clubs; we provide proactive, round-the clock support in conjunction with a comprehensive network of correspondents. We can also help with the prevention of situations that could lead to claims. Our risk management team includes a former master mariner and a former chief engineer who are on hand to provide advice and administer ships’ surveys.
Asian P&I business is handled through our sister operation, QBE Asia P&I, which offers the same cover, service and terms and conditions. The team is led by a British Marine underwriter and a British Marine claims handler.
We offer Freight, Demurrage and Defence cover through British Marine for legal costs relating to disputes arising from the owning, operation, sale, purchase or building of a ship.
